While it is easy to assume ‘a caribou is a caribou,’ there are subspecies of the arctic animal that prefer to roam within specific regions of the north. Far beyond Nunavut’s mainland in the arctic islands lives the Peary Caribou, a smaller breed of caribou that broadly roams around communities like Paulatuk, Ulukhatok, Taloyoak, and Resolute Bay.
This lot by Jaybeddie Amagoalik has the shorter legs of the Peary Caribou, albeit tucked under himself against the cold. The smoothly polished stone highlights a stocky body and provides a solid base to display two antlers. Though endangered and likely a rare sight in town, there is always the possibility this work was modeled after a lone caribou close to the community, taking a break between munching on arctic grasses around town.
