Pitseolak Ashoona drew freely from remembered camp life, from stories heard and retold, and from the beliefs that shaped the world around her. In Old Women Speak of Owl, two women sit in conversation above a great owl whose spread wings seem to shoulder the entire scene. Nearby, a dog throws back its head to howl, while hunting implements and small scattered details deepen the sense of a story already in motion. Space is compressed and stacked rather than observed conventionally, so that women, owl, dog, and objects seem to inhabit the same charged field. Pitseolak turns recollection into image with characteristic directness, binding speech, animal presence, and memory into a single strange and compelling scene.
