This Tlingit figure depicts the Tlingit hero Dukt'ootl’, also known as the Strong Man or Black Skin, who trained in secret to avenge his uncle’s death by killing the sea lion responsible. This carving captures the grisly moment that Dukt'ootl’ rends the sea lion in half with his bare hands. Although the maker of this figure is currently unidentified, the artist was prolific and made a number of these figures in the first quarter of the 20th century. Identifying features of this artist include the bright palette of red, green, and yellow, the depiction of a headband on the head Dukt'ootl’, as well as the human faces shown on the rear flippers of the sea lion.
