Latcholassie Akesuk is among the most beloved sculptors from Cape Dorset, prized for the way he gives an animal a distinct presence, which does not depend on naturalistic detail. Instead, he looks for the small decisions that make a creature feel individual. While his seals often keep closer to observed anatomy than his owls, here, in Lounging Seal, he takes the more playful route he often reserved for his owls.

While his seals often keep closer to observed anatomy than his owls, here, in Lounging Seal, he takes the more playful route he often reserved for his owls. This fellow is shaped for character rather than correctness, with proportions deliberately bent to suit the unusual pose. The rear of the figure is the boldest invention, narrowing and extending in a way that reads almost like a pair of human legs, planted where flippers should be.
