James Rudolph was an accomplished Tlingit carver and painter based in Juneau, Alaska. Beyond making pieces for sale to tourists, Rudolph was commissioned to create the Thunderbird House screen for the Wooshkeetaan clan that is now in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA). Rudolph was known for creating intricate model poles and his work was featured at an exhibition in Paris in 1931 (Alaska State Library – Historical Collections, ASL-P240-258). This model pole is nearly identical to one featured on page 90 in Carvings and Commerce: Model Totem Poles 1880-2010 (2011). There is a period-correct stamp from the historic Nugget Shop on the verso.
