Despite being best known as a photographer and historian, Peter Pitseolak was also a gifted sculptor and graphic artist. Pitseolak realized the importance of documenting a way of life that was disappearing before his very eyes. He understood that not only was the semi-nomadic camp life fading away but so too were many of the ancient beliefs as many Inuit converted to Christianity. In this wonderfully carved transformation, Pitseolak presents us with a talisman which is small but packs a powerful punch. Interestingly, the image reminds us of contemporaneous carvings by the gifted Kugluktuk (Coppermine) artist Peggy Ekagina.
