IYOLA KINGWATSIAK (1933-2000) KINNGAIT (CAPE DORSET)
18/50
ESTIMATE: $900 — $1,200
Iyola Kingwatsiak was an artist who worked both on paper and in stone, and while having started his artistic practice as a carver, he later became known for his creation of prints in Kinngait between 1959 and 1977, as well as from 1984 to 1988. In the early years he did the engraving and platemaking for his own artwork in the annual print collection, including the present Untitled work. While artists do work closely with their printmakers in Kinngait to ensure the work is what it should be, there is something special about and artist who does the entire process from start to finish. The upward hand and floating birds on their long necks spring from this man's mind as much as they do from Iyola's. While simple and small, this print has life and movement in it, direct from the artist's hands.
