From the beginning of her artistic career, Myra Kukiiyaut leaned toward the intangible. Her works do not simply illustrate, they evoke. Drawn from memory and shaped by traditional songs, legends, and belief systems, her images move through the space between story and sensation.

In Umayut Asianik Isumaliit (Animals Have Different Thoughts), figures pile and fold into one another, a gathering of beings in a kind of visual chorus. The forms are built through stencil, each shape laid down by Myra herself, one careful layer at a time. Deep green floats over soft purple-grey, which rests on black. The result is a kind of dreaming in colour. The stencil does not constrain the forms; it anchors them, giving structure to a vision that is otherwise unbound.
