By the early 1950s the community of Inukjuak (Port Harrison) was producing some of the finest sculpture of the period, but attributions from these early years are often uncertain. This Standing Mother and Child bears strong similarities to early works by Isa Smiler (see First Arts, 4 December 2023, Lot 25), though Sarah Nastapoka is another intriguing possibility (see Darlene Wight, Early Masters, WAG, 2006, p. 78). Whoever the carver, the sculpture is a superb celebration of the female form, from the carefully dressed hair to the soap inlay and tiny ivory toggle of her coat. This woman stands broad and splendid, her elaborate amautiq swelling around her body while the small face of her child peers over one shoulder. Gorgeous.
