In Nancy Pukingrnak’s Kneeling Young Woman, Plaiting Her Hair, the face is calm, beautiful, and almost disarmingly direct, meeting the viewer’s gaze without reserve. But it is the hands, enlarged well beyond natural proportion, that command the sculpture. They pull the eye away from the face and into the action, gathering and plaiting one side of the woman’s hair. Behind, the completed braid drops heavily down her back. Pukingrnak makes the simple act of dressing one’s hair feel monumental, giving gesture, concentration, and bodily form equal weight.
