Jack James was a well-known mask and model pole maker from Gilford Island who was active for much of the 20th century. James’ sculptural style is defined by robust forms and exaggerated features in the faces of his masks, like on this one. This piece may represent a portrait of a person or a humanoid supernatural being. The prominent nose, large lips, flared nostrils, and recessed chin create a strong profile that is very striking. Like many Northwest Coast pieces from the 1960s and perhaps in a nod to modernism, the mask is unpainted and is instead stained to highlight James’ sculpture and the beautiful grain of the old growth red cedar.
