These early ivories, dating back to the early 1930s, are charmingly naïve in execution yet depict their subjects with elegance. One cannot help but marvel at the skills of Inuit hunters, whose survival depended on their ability to craft tools and weapons from ivory, bone, and antler. These talents are even more impressive when applied to creating artwork. Truly beautiful.

Provenance

Collected by William Melville MacLean (1888-1978), the Canadian Post Office official traveling to Hudson Bay, Baffin Island, and Craig Harbour on Ellesmere Island aboard the famous Arctic icebreaker Nascopie when it was rechristened the R.M.S. [Royal Mail Ship] Nascopie in 1935;
by descent in the family.
