We have spoken at length about David Ruben Piqtoukun’s singular style and the compositional flair that he applies to his work. Like many of his shamans, this one features the distinctive tattoo lines and strong lips pursed into an ‘O’ that chant an unheard song. Where One-Eyed Shaman Speaking an Incantation differs from many of his predecessors is the singular inlaid eye in the centre of the tattoo lines, as well as the notably alien-esque head shape to the figure. There is still the faintly triangular profile to the head, much like many of David’s mask-like faces, that almost daintily tapers into the base holding the work up. One can see this piece as a manifestation of the shaman's transformative journey, the orange stone providing a further othering quality to the work as a whole.
