Within the canon of Inuit art, there are a clutch of names that immediately bring their respective styles to mind when spoken. David Ruben Piqtoukun, probably best known for his spiritual and figural styles, is near the top of the list. It in some ways furthers the conundrum of the present work, Rock Pile Composition, a piece that at first glance is only related to David's work in material. A closer inspection however does present his hallmarks; slender, elongated rocks have been finished with curves that are pleasing to the eye and the hand. A lone standing figure or cairn is centralized in the work, adding height to the scene. The colour of the various pieces can be seen in other works as well, and act almost as an homage to his sculpture work as a whole, ensuring no piece is left behind. There is intention in this piece, as all the pieces are finished and meant to be together, ever with a viewer's intervention. Lovely.
