Steven Clay Brown, a noted scholar specializing in the art of the North Pacific Coast, focuses his work on exploring the evolution and transformations of Northwest Coast art. An aspect of Brown’s scholarship focuses on the analysis of motifs, patterns, and the cultural context behind the use of formline.

In this unique work, Brown draws inspiration from the traditional formline design of the Northwest Coast to illustrate a salmon motif. Through a striking display of symmetry and masterful use of traditional formlines, Brown captures the fluidity and movement inherent in the salmon's form. The interwoven patterns, carefully crafted negative space, and bold line work pay homage to the timeless design that define the art of the Northwest Coast.
