This conical shaped seed basket is made from natural and dyed spruce root and bear grass by an unknown Chehalis (Coast Salish) artist from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State....
This conical shaped seed basket is made from natural and dyed spruce root and bear grass by an unknown Chehalis (Coast Salish) artist from the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The basket is intricately woven with horizontal bands of dyed roots in tones of green, brown, and red woven in a tight twining style with rows of bear grass false embroidered in the center of each band. The rim is finished with a sturdy coiled edge and a twined handle for carrying the basket.
