Francis Horne was born in Washington State to a Lummi father and Tsawout First Nation mother, but was raised on Vancouver Island, British Columbia. He is a prolific and self-taught carver who has been active since the 1970s. His works can be found in many public and private collections, including the City of Totems collection in Duncan, BC, the Burke Museum, the Penn Museum, and the Autry National Center.
This model frontlet is carved in alder and inlaid with 16 pieces of abalone shell. The shape of the frontlet references a copper, a signifier of wealth, with a seated bear rendered in high relief. Both the copper shape and large number of abalone inlays may indicate that this frontlet is meant to convey both status and wealth.
