To say this work is "busy" is doing both the work and its makers, Eva Ikinilik Nagyougalik and Sophie Kotsik Nagyougalik, a disservice. Teeming with an abundance of stitchwork, I Love Summer is a densely populated homage to a season on the tundra, filled with more life than many southerners will ever give it credit for. The land around Qamni'tuaq is abstracted in this almost top-down view, with leaves and fern-like tendrils snaking and spreading across the duffel. Small groupings cluster here and there in radiating colour thanks to variegated thread and bunched stitches. Lines of feather and chain stitches lead to a central encircled appliqué heart bearing Sophie's name, boldly signed and reminiscent of a sampler with practiced stitches. The work as a whole features the hand of both its makers, a collaborative project between mother and daughter.
