This work by Miriam Qiyuk exemplifies her mastery of both sculpture and textile arts, blending the pliable and tactile qualities of fabric with the structural sensibilities of carving. This charming little female Eider Duck maintains a sculptural presence through its carefully formed and proportioned shape, reflecting Qiyuk's keen understanding of form and volume. Yet, it also embraces the softness and flexibility of textiles, utilizing stitching to create texture and detail. Carefully embroidered stitches are laid throughout this work to create directional feathers that are almost puffed up against the cold air and water. With her head and slender neck stretched out, one can easily imagine this little duck floating on the water, watching the horizon. Qiyuk’s ability to balance these mediums highlights her innovative approach to materiality, translating the solidity and permanence of traditional sculpture into the warmth and adaptability of textile work.
