While Rick Rivet’s artistic practice draws influence from many sources, a recurring theme within his canon is that of the journey. He presents these crossings through his own invented visual language and imagery, which almost always include some sort of watercraft, depicted in various ways. Journey #25 presents a slim rowing boat seen from a bird’s eye view, with several long paddles splayed out from its sides. With possibly the truest sense of the “hand of the artist,” Rivet’s handprints at left and right create the impression that he has folded open some shroud that allows us to look down onto the scene from high above. It’s an interesting, and dizzying, trick of perspective.
