Captain Andrew Brown carved prolifically in the early twentieth century, creating model poles in argillite and wood distinguished by their inventive character. While many contemporaries adhered to Haida conventions of balance and symmetry, Brown favoured a freer approach, merging abstraction with naturalism and exploring transformative themes rooted in traditional stories.
His close association with anthropologist Marius Barbeau brought his carvings to public attention through publications and museum collections, securing him lasting recognition as one of the most widely collected argillite carvers of his time.
