    LOT 23
    ESTIMATE: $500 — $800

Untitled (Opposing Roosters / Cocks Fighting) was reproduced as a spread on the front and back cover of the April 1957 Imperial Oil Review. It was additionally reproduced in black and white, along with photographs of the artist in his studio, with a note on the artist.

In 1959, the Imperial Oil Review discussed the 31 artworks that were selected to be exhibited during a seven month tour of the Western Canada Art Circuit, which travelled to Prince Albert, SK, Calgary, Banff, Kelowna, B.C., Victoria, Edmonton, Brandon, MB. Of the present oil, the Review author wrote, “There is the primitive vivid splash of Sohaney's "Fighting Cocks", April, 1957, one of our most popular covers, judging from reader response. (The U.S. Embassy in Ottawa requested a print suitable for framing; 200 reprints were distributed with an issue of Canadian Art Magazine.)”

A copy of both the 1957 Imperial Oil Review and the 1955 Canadian Art Magazine reproduction are included in this lot.
