Rufus Moody was born in Skidegate village, Haida Gwaii. He was the son of Arthur Moody (1885-1967) and the grandson of Thomas Moody, both of whom were renowed argillite carvers. Rufus Moody is credited with creating the tallest argillite totem pole in the world, which is approximately six feet tall and housed at the UBC Museum of Anthropology in Vancouver. In 1976, Rufus Moody received the Order of Canada for his achievements as an artist and his efforts to train young people to carve.
