Omitting any superfluous details, printmaker Eegyvudluk Pootoogook simplifies the water line to a curving line that embraces the seal’s body below its neck, where the icy blue ink is sparingly applied, creating the effect of the water glistening and breaking as the seal’s head pokes through the surface. In contrast to the other works of the 1960 Kinngait Print Collection, which feature both seal and hunter, here the animal is pictured alone on the sheet. The suggestion that the creature has been caught in the act of surfacing by a distant, unseen hunter is merely insinuated by its wide-eyed, inquisitive gaze.References: Reproduced in Lloyd Stewart, “Carlin Galleries Open Eskimo Art Exhibition,” Fort Worth Star Telegram, p. 14; James Houston, Eskimo Prints, (Toronto: Longman, 1971) p. 53
