Koomwartok, the brother of carvers Qaqaq (see Lots 14, 12 & 18) and Kiguak, was recognized as a gifted artist during his lifetime but his body of work has been...Koomwartok, the brother of carvers Qaqaq (see Lots 14, 12 & 18) and Kiguak, was recognized as a gifted artist during his lifetime but his body of work has been largely overshadowed by his siblings. Koomwartok's works, like his brothers, are inspired by the stone from which they are carved but an examination of Koomwartok's works reveals that he crafted an artistic style that was distinct. In the present work, we see a hallmark of the artist: the large, almost Justinian shaped, almond eyes on both the fierce mother owl and her young fledgling.
