While this accounts for the bulky, simplified forms of the two figures, it makes it all the more impressive that Qaqaq was able to delineate the features of this Mother and Child with such a high degree of fineness. The proportions of the faces contain a sophisticated sense of naturalism. The mother’s mouth draws upward in a toothy grin, which is reflected in her raised cheeks and smiling eyes. The relaxed mouth and chubby cheeks of the baby in the amautiq hood, coupled with his closed eyes, suggest that he is in a state of relaxed slumber. Qaqaq’s skillful carving and visual vocabulary gives the work a gentle pathos that is tender and highly emotionally appealing.Provenance
