First Arts extends our gratitude to Christopher W. Smith for his assistance in cataloging this lot.

This bowl was made for the tourist market, most likely by a Kaigani Haida or Tsimshian artist. The greenish painting with thick dashes on the side may indicate a maker from Metlakatla,Alaska. The incised ovoid and split-u forms on the sides of the bowl point to it being made in thefirst quarter of the 20th century. Heavy weathering inside the bowl is also indicative of an early20th century date of manufacture.
