Both the stone and ivory elements are meticulously crafted; the sensitively carved figure of the hunter shows him momentarily resting rather than pressing on his team of dogs.
References: There are some stylistic similarities to identified works by Inukjuak sculptures in the Winnipeg Art Gallery to suggest a potential attribution for this work. One possibility is Isa Oomayoulook (1915-1976), based on the treatment of the kamiks, in particular. Another possibility is Syollie (Sarollie) Weetaluktuk (1906-1962). See Darlene Coward Wight, Early Masters: Inuit Sculpture 1949-1955, (Winnipeg: Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2006), p. 57 and 67, respectively, for examples. For other works by Inukjuak sculptors, both known and unidentified, see Jean Blodgett, Port Harrison / Inoucdjouac, (Winnipeg: Winnipeg Art Gallery, 1976); and A.
