Wolves frequently appear on Nuu-chah-nulth art as they are central figures in Nuu-chah-nulth winter dances and cosmology. The artist of this pole has given their carving a humorous twist, rendering the seated wolf figure in an exaggerated style that appears to be influenced by cartoon depictions of the Big Bad Wolf character from the 1930s. Indigenous artists creating model poles have often incorporated pop culture elements into their carvings that may feature figures such as cartoon characters, entertainers, or popular brand mascots from their era.
