Born to a family of carvers, including grandfather Charlie James and uncle Mungo Martin, Ellen Neel was one of only a few female artists to try her hand at carving and to sell her work at Stanley Park.  In 1946, after her husband's stroke, Ellen Neel turned to woodworking to support her family, carving from her home studio.  By 1948, she received several commissions to create totem poles in the Vancouver area.
