OLD FROM CHRIS:
A refined three figure model argillite pole featuring an eagle, bear, and killer whale, signed Gitsgah and dated 1972. Gitkinjuaas (Ron Wilson), is the current hereditary chief of Cumshewa and also goes by the name Giitxaas and, previously, Gitsgah. Notably, the majority of his pieces are signed Gitsgah as this was the name he used for much of his carving career. Gitkinjuaas is primarily known for his work in argillite and jewelry, having been a prolific artist since the early 1960s. Gitkinjuaas received his formal art training at the Vancouver School of Art (now known as Emily Carr University of Art and Design) and studied under master carver Henry Hunt Sr. (Kwakwaka’wakw, 1923-1985). Gitkinjuaas continues to carve today and is active in his Haida community.— Christopher W. Smith
