One of the oldest men to take up carving in the Baker Lake area, George Tatanniq helped to create the Qamani’tuaq sculptural aesthetic, already in the early 1960s with his...One of the oldest men to take up carving in the Baker Lake area, George Tatanniq helped to create the Qamani’tuaq sculptural aesthetic, already in the early 1960s with his streamlined muskoxen and birds, and through the 1970s with his crisply carved human figures. Although he carved several impressively large works he is best known for his smaller figural carvings of standing mothers, hunters, and drummers. This stoic Drum Dancer is typical of the artist’s later style.
