An open cedar berry basket made by Git’ans Git’anee Haida artist, Lisa Telford. Born in Ketchikan, Alaska, Telford learned basketry weaving from her aunt, prolific Haida artist, Ilskyaalas (Delores Churchill). Woven in a crossed warp twining style, this basket has a standard plain cylindrical shape and is decorated with five horizontal bands of dyed red and blue cedar woven in a classic Tlingit “strawberry” pattern. The alternating slip stitches of undyed cedar wefts over slanting warps gives this basket a uniquely interesting texture and appeal. The rim is finished with a singular row of three strands twining for a clean edge.
