Made during the early years of carving for sale in Nunavik, probably in Inukjuak or Puvirnituq, it resists easy attribution. Neither the stone nor the handling points decisively to a single community.
Its appeal lies in the ingenuity of its construction. The mother’s head and the swaddled infant are both detachable, each fitting neatly and snugly into the body. The carving is finely finished and technically deft, suggesting a maker already highly comfortable with the material. Compact, clever and tender, the composition has the intimate presence of a small devotional object and recalls, in feeling, certain medieval images of the Madonna and Child.
