This contemporary cedar bark clam gathering basket with a band of Raven’s tail weaving is made by an unidentified Haida master weaver. Even though the artist remains unknown, the skill on display is undeniable—this is the work of a truly accomplished hand. Similar to weavings made by Diane Douglas Willard and Marie Oldfield, this basket has a unique style that blends traditional materials and weaving techniques with contemporary designs.

The striking basket is woven with red cedar bark in an “eye holes” pattern using a crossed warp twining method. A band of Raven’s tail decorates the top, woven in red and black dyed waxed linen thread. Clam baskets like this are commonly constructed in an open weave, allowing water and sand to easily pass through the holes.
