This marvelous Standing Woman is both striking and enigmatic. The piece is obviously the product of gifted hands, but its signature is partially illegible, so, sadly, we cannot give the artist his/her due. There are several stylistic factors which help us to narrow down the time and general area of origin. The woman is wearing boots which have side pouches used for storage. Boots with large pouches were commonly worn by women along much of the west coast of Hudson Bay and among the Iglulingmiut in the 19th and early 20th centuries [1]. The marvelous attention to the depiction of the woman’s clothing, as well as her striking hairdo almost make this fine sculpture seem like a late 19th century Arctic photograph brought to life. Wonderful!
