Early in her career, at the encouragement of James Houston and the...Many of Pitseolak’s early drawn creatures have a fantastical air to them, either in pose or by design. Early in her career, at the encouragement of James Houston and the inspiration of her cousin Kiakshuk, she began drawing "little monsters," as she called them, and Playing Kickball with Demons is a charming example. The effect is subtle at first, and the print with minimal colour, so it takes a moment to see the more grotesque features on the players of a seemingly innocent game. The sense of happiness (at least we think it’s happiness!) from the human figure is countered with the unknowable expressions of the demons; are they playing along, or scheming to torment the figure in some way? Who is to say?
