Muskox calves begin to grow horns when they are about four to five weeks old. The horns are almost white at first, gradually growing darker and more ridged with age. This portrait, therefore, is of a very young muskox calf. Ullulaq obviously had a special affinity for these animals, depicting them in various ways: by themselves, being hunted, tossing hapless hunters or predators (see Lot 59), and as transforming shamans. This charming calf reminds us of a small carving formerly in the Albrecht Collection (see Ingo Hessel, Arctic Spirit, cat. 84).
