Interestingly, its format reminds us of a wonderful whale bone sculpture by Sakkiassee Anaija from 1969 (see First Arts June 2022, Lot 70), and was almost surely carved from a very similar piece of bone. Nahaulaituq began carving mostly whale bone in the late 1960s but only took up carving as a livelihood after moving off the land and into Taloyoak (then Spence Bay) in 1972, after which he carved mostly in stone. He was considered one of the foremost Taloyoak sculptors throughout the 1980s and was given five solo exhibitions in Canada, Germany, and the U.S. Five sculptures by the artist were included in Darlene Wight’s Art & Expression of the Netsilik exhibition (WAG, 2000).
