The composition is notable for its unconventional "cropped" display—a rarity in the printmaking of Kinngait during this era. Each bird is rendered with an apparent simplicity that conceals the intricate interplay of their interlocking forms, poised delicately atop the water.
Kananginak Pootoogook’s mastery of stencil and stonecut techniques is on full display here. The stenciled blue ink glows with a luminous quality, as the white of the paper peeks through, evoking the shimmering effect of sunlight dancing on an Arctic sea. Meanwhile, the jet-black ink, applied with a stone block, contrasts sharply against the negative space, shaping the buoyant forms of the birds. Together, these elements create a scene of quiet elegance, where the cheerful birds seem to glide effortlessly across the cold, glistening waters of the North.
