Set on a page from one of the many notebooks believed to have been gifted by James Houston, this collection of vignettes offers a serene glimpse into the rhythms of spring camp life, all captured in Niviaqsi’s signature style.
At the top, a meticulously crafted skin tent stands, its poles doubling as a drying rack for two pairs of boots. To the right, an orderly string of fish hangs to cure in the open air. Moving down the page, we witness a father and son engaged in the age-old task of flensing a captured seal, the son watching closely as his father begins the intricate work. Below, the juxtaposition of labour and play unfolds: two figures participate in a traditional game, possibly involving a disc or ball, while nearby, two others focus on erecting a tent. One pauses mid-task to acknowledge the playful pair with an outstretched arm. At the bottom of the scene, a quartet of sled dogs is tethered—three resting peacefully while the fourth, perhaps energized by the nearby game, stands alert.
