An homage to carvers, Shaman and Two Wives marries Aoudla Pudlat’s skills as a fantastical and photorealistic illustrator. The works depicted throughout are known pieces, including Tattooed Face by Joanasee Kakkik (centre), currently at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, and the Dorset Antler Wand (far left and right) that can be found in the University of Cambridge’s Museum of Archeology and Anthropology. Their details are rendered truthfully to ensure that we see these are known works, but they float in a sea of blues in three vignettes on the page. Aoudla moved to Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) in 1996 to study printmaking techniques at Nunavut Arctic College. This work and 13 others became the “Baker Lake Series,” the result of his studies and time in Qamani’tuaq.
