Never one to shy away from a bright palette, Luke Anguhadluq has created a delightful contrast of textures in Caribou Grazing. The scratched and scrawled feel of the grass on the tundra is balanced by the solid body of the caribou, who sports his own subtle hints of ruffled fur at the neck and belly. The orange antlers have a gentle curve that arches over the small valley in which the caribou quietly enjoys a meal, surprisingly peaceful by comparison to the bright colours of the scene.
The related drawing, c. 1972, for this print is reproduced in Cynthia Waye Cook, From the Centre: The Drawings of Luke Anguhadluq, (Toronto: Art Gallery of Ontario, 1993), cat. 65.
