Best known for his works on paper, Simon Tookoome’s graphic style is greatly influenced by his childhood on the land. Hybrid animals and shamanic practices are familiar themes in his work, both of which have been highlighted in this metal sculpture. This work was made collaboration with Canadian artist Joe Fafard (1942-2019), who began to experiment with laser cut metals in the 1980s and 90s. The technique of the metal cut-outs works well for Tookoome’s artistic vision, giving his imagery both a depth and airiness. Despite the splayed legs to keep the wolf upright, this work maintains a flat plane for Tookoome's figures to peek out of.
