Initially, tupilaks in Greenland were viewed as potent magical entities, often crafted from animal bones encased in skin, and believed to possess lethal capabilities. The practice of sculpting small tupilak figures, representing "evil spirits", emerged in East Greenland in the early 1900s and was adopted in West Greenland circa 1930.
