This print was commissioned by Robert Watt, then the director of the Vancouver Museum (1980-1988) and future Chief Herald representing Canada for the coat of arms (armorial bearings) for the city of North Vancouver. At the time Susan Point was relatively unknown and produced a few prints at her kitchen table while working as a legal secretary. Watt had heard of a talented young artist working in Musqueam and he approached her to inquire about her interest in the commission. This would be the first commission for Susan Point, who is now possibly the most commissioned artist in Canada with monumental works for public, private and corporate spaces throughout Vancouver and internationally. Watt would write the book People Among the People – the Public Art of Susan Point (Figure 1 Publishers) in 2019 to document her many works on public display, a list that continues to grow to this day. Point has remained dedicated to the print medium which remains in high demand and keeps her work accessible to a large audience.
