The Frog bowl is based on the traditional animal-form bowls carved in wood and used in ceremonies for offerings (dipping of salmon into eulachon grease) and often carved as gifts to dignitaries. These forms were adapted to argillite and carved for trade and for sale. Charles Edenshaw carved a frog bowl and others that were miniatures but fully sculpted forms which inspired later artists to explore traditional forms on a small scale.
