An argillite platter depicting the Wasco, a supernatural sea monster that lived in a lake on Haida Gwaii. The story is frequently told as the “Lazy Son-in-law story”

Rufus Moody was a prolific argillite carver and also a transitional carver between generations as a teacher and mentor and a preserver of stories and classic forms that carried Haida art through the era affected by extreme loss due to disease, assimilation and legal persecution. Moody defined the argillite medium during the 60’s and 70’s and was widely collected by museums and private collectors. He carved some of the largest pieces in argillite at a time when larger slabs of argillite could be obtained. He is represented in many museum collections and all the books documenting argillite carving.
