This sculpture depicts the story of Nanasimigat and the whale, a story of a whale becoming infatuated with a human and plotting her kidnapping and transformation to the undersea world. Her disappearance would be untraceable if not for the presence of Mouse Woman who monitors the interactions between the spirit and human world and often reveals the details and solutions to correct the unbalance.
Ron Russ works in both argillite, wood and precious metals. He was born in Masset in 1953 and works as a golf pro as well as being a career carver. His work is included in the collections of the UBC Museum of Anthropology and the Prince Rupert Museum. He has produced a series of medallions combining yew wood and argillite often with gold or silver inlays. He has chosen hard woods such as yew for their hard edge and ability to capture sharp and intricate details.
