flock of geese who have taken off their feather coats
and turned into men and women. He takes one of
the women for his wife, but she misses her flock too
much and soon begins to gather feathers. When she
has enough she makes herself a coat and flies away."
Leslie Boyd Ryan, John Westren, Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection 2010, (Dorset Fine Arts, Kinngait, 2010), p. 3.
Ningiukulu Teevee has frequently been motivated by Inuit oral tradition in her work, and has represented various parts of the Kiviuq legend before. One of her two depictions from the legend in the 2010 Annual Print Collection, Kiviup Nulianga is a petite and bright example of Ningiukulu's handling of the nude human form. There are gentle changes in colour in the figure's skin as she looks towards her amassed feathers, soon to take her leave.
